How Vitalens handles food photos, nutrition logs, AI processing, and Apple Health data.

Effective date: April 29, 2026

Overview

Vitalens helps users analyze food with AI, estimate nutrition, track meals, and optionally write logged nutrition to Apple Health.

Vitalens is designed for anonymous local use. The app does not require account creation, login, or user-generated public content.

Information Processed by the App

  • Food photos: When you tap Scan and accept AI processing, the selected camera image is sent to OpenAI to identify food and estimate nutrition. Vitalens does not store food photos on our servers.
  • Profile preferences: Goals and allergies you select may be included in AI prompts so the app can personalize nutrition insights.
  • Meal logs: Food names, nutrition estimates, timestamps, serving sizes, and meal categories are stored locally on your device unless a future sync feature is explicitly enabled.
  • Apple Health: If you enable Apple Health export, Vitalens writes logged nutrition values such as calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, and sodium. Vitalens does not read Apple Health data.

Third-Party AI Processing

Vitalens uses OpenAI to provide food image analysis and AI nutrition chat. Data sent to OpenAI may include the food photo you choose to scan, detected food and nutrition data, your selected goals, selected allergies, today's nutrition totals, and your chat question.

Vitalens asks for explicit in-app permission before sending data to OpenAI. If you do not accept, AI scanning and AI chat features will not send your data to OpenAI.

External Services

  • OpenAI provides AI image analysis and AI nutrition chat.
  • Open Food Facts may be used for barcode lookup when barcode scanning is selected.
  • Apple StoreKit processes subscriptions and purchases.
  • Apple HealthKit is used only if you enable nutrition export to Apple Health.

Data Deletion

Vitalens does not create user accounts. You can delete local app data from Profile > Settings > Delete Local Data. This removes your profile, goals, allergies, scan history, meal logs, and AI consent from the device.

Deleting the app also removes locally stored Vitalens data from the device.
